Key benefits

  • Embryo-safe (MEA tested)
  • Alcohol and VOC free
  • Quaternary ammonium (DDAC) free*
  • Bactericidal and virucidal in seconds
  • Fungicidal and sporicidal in minutes
  • Biodegradable, eco-friendly, safe and an effective solution for disinfection
  • Safe for use on laboratory grade stainless steel
  • No toxic residues after disinfecting

Features

Fertisafe™ contains a unique blend of chlorine, hydrogen, and oxygen compounds (including chlorine dioxide, hypochlorites, ozone and free oxygen radicals). Unlike a pure chlorine solution, it has a low chemical load and does not react with the nitrogen products in biomasses, but is very potent at the molecular level against microbial structures. Fertisafe™ will eliminate every bacteria, viruses, spores and fungi tested. Fertisafe™ is proven to be both a safe and powerful disinfectant. As part of the research, during development of the product embryos were successfully cultured in media which was supplemented with 5% Fertisafe™. Currently each batch is MEA tested and each batch is also tested for efficacy against Bacillus subtilis var niger and achieves 6-log reduction in five minutes.

“I have been routinely using Fertisafe™ products in the IVF lab and find them to be VOC free, non-toxic to mouse gametes and pre-implantation embryos and an extremely effective sterilization solution.”

Ronny Janssens, Quality Manager

Sims International Fertility Clinic

“We’ve been using Fertisafe™ to clean our incubators for the last 10 months and have passed our biological testing each time without any issues.”

Graham Coull, Laboratory Director

Q: Is Fertisafe™ safe for embryos?

A: The safety of each batch of Fertisafe™ is routinely confirmed through MEA testing.

Q: What research has been done on Fertisafe™?

A: Please refer to the abstract of R. Janssens’ paper published at ESHRE 2007 and linked on the RI website. In the study, the wipe and spray were used in a controlled environment and colony-forming units were counted after a 48-hour period. The researchers concluded that: “Fertisafe™ can be safely used in IVF laboratories, as it was proved to be an effective decontamination solution while being non-toxic for gametes and pre-implantation embryos?”

Q: How is Fertisafe™ proven embryo-safe?

A: The spray is MEA tested by humidifying the surface of a Petri dish with the Fertisafe™ liquid and the liquid is allowed to completely evaporate before use.

1.1. Zygotes are incubated in a treated collection dish for 30 minutes before transfer to the culture dish.

1.2. Culture plate is treated as described above and used for grouped embryo culture thereafter.

The resulting embryos develop in line with the control group not exposed to Fertisafe™. MEA test certificates are available.

2. The wipes are MEA tested by filtering embryo culture medium through a Fertisafe™ wipe. That medium is then used to culture embryos, which develop normally. MEA test certificates are available.

Q: How long after application is the surface safe for resuming activities?

A: The surface is ready for use after Fertisafe™ (or the water wash) is dry.

Q:What organisms are susceptible to Fertisafe™?

A: Fertisafe™ is composed of chlorine, sodium, hydrogen and oxygen compounds which rapidly destroy bacteria, viruses, spores and fungi.

Q: What is the active ingredient?

A: Fertisafe™ is electrolyzed brine. It is produced by passing dissolved sodium chloride (brine) across electrodes in combination with a patented membrane technology. This produces a range of chlorine, sodium, hydrogen and oxygen compounds that, unlike a pure chlorine solution, has a low chemical load and does not react with the nitrogen products in biomasses. It is very potent at the molecular level against microbial structures.

Q: I smell chlorine – is this right?

A: Fertisafe™ contains a tiny amount of free chlorine – enough to smell, but it’s not harmful.

Q: Does Fertisafe™ eliminate HIV?

A: Fertisafe™ has been tested on HIV Virus Type 1; strain HTLV-IIIB in accordance with the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) DIS / TSS-07 guidelines. Complete inactivation of HIV –1 was achieved after a 10 minute exposure time to Fertisafe™. This fully meets the EPA’s requirements.

Q: Is Fertisafe™ also safe to use near sperm?

A: As with all disinfectants, direct contact, or use in a very confined space with Fertisafe™ is toxic to sperm. However, unlike other disinfectants, Fertisafe™ has no harmful effects once dried.

Q: Can I use Fertisafe™ to disinfect my incubator?

A: RI is currently working on this and has commissioned a white paper on the subject. The paper is available upon request.

Q: Can Fertisafe™ be used on floors?

A: Some laboratories do use it for this purpose, undiluted or diluted 5:1.

Q: A white patchy residue has been left behind. What is it, is it safe and how do I remove it?

A: This is simply salt (sodium chloride) and is harmless. If you wish to remove it, use sterile water and a sterile dry wipe to clean the residue away.

Q: When would you use the spray rather than wipes?

A: To disinfect surfaces, incubators and flow hoods the spray is ideal. If Fertisafe™ is used to disinfect individual items like lab equipment and microscopes, then the wipe maybe easier and more convenient; ultimately it is down to individual preference.

Q: Can I immerse items in Fertisafe™ liquid?

A: We recommend Fertisafe™ be used as a spray or wipe only.

Q: How do I store Fertisafe™?

A: Fertisafe™ should be stored away from direct sunlight and away from heat.

Q: What is the recommended frequency of use?

A: It should be used daily to disinfect workbenches, microscopes and all work areas in the laboratory. Disinfecting is up to individual lab protocols but many clinics opt to use it between each procedure.

Q: How long does a one litre bottle of spray last?

A: This depends on how big the lab is and the frequency it is used. An average size lab would use approximately one bottle per month.

Q: Once opened, how long can the product be used for?

A: 4 weeks.

Q: How effective is Fertisafe™?

A: Fertisafe™ is batch tested with a biological surrogate (biologic indicator) – Bacillus subtilis var. niger spores. Fertisafe™ achieves a 6-log reduction. This means that Fertisafe™ will reduce the number of spores to one millionth of the original level. This is as close to the theoretical ideal of zero microbes remaining as is practically achievable, and is the gold standard pass mark for all sterilisation and disinfection processes.
