The characteristics of the four materials used for making probe needles are:

Steel: Low cost general purpose probe needles made from close-grained steel.
Tungsten: Strong probe needles for use where a long-life tip is the first consideration.
Gold: For minimum specimen damage and low contact resistance, but generally not for the smallest areas. Solid construction in fine gold.
Gold Alloy: Harder and stiffer than fine gold, resulting in more robust tip. Smaller radius tips are possible with gold alloy than with fine gold.
