Injection Micropipettes

RI ICSI-Plus™ injection micropipettes can be used to immobilise, then inject spermatozoa into the cytoplasm of an oocyte during ICSI and intracytoplasmic morphologically-selected sperm injection (IMSI).

Our ICSI-Plus™ injection micropipettes are designed for the smoothest control of sperm injection and cytoplasm suction, and to minimise damage to the oocyte.  Multiple sperm can be loaded and injected.

Injection micropipettes from RI are available with a spike (SI) or without a spike (NI) and in 2 different glass thicknesses – 1µm (standard) or 0.9µm (thin – T code).

For human ART, the larger 8µm ID injection micropipette is ideal for collecting sperm from a testicular tissue sample prior to ICSI and is only available in thin (T code) glass.

Mechanical Dissection

RI mechanical dissection micropipettes (MD) are used to mechanically cut an opening in the zona pellucida of an oocyte or embryo to enable assisted hatching and biopsy.

The micropipette is designed with a sharp tip and a strong taper section for easy control and precise manipulation.

RI assisted hatching micropipettes (AH) are used to direct acidic solution (acid tyrodes) onto the zona pellucida to thin the zona or create a hole to enable the embryo to hatch.

Biopsy Micropipettes

RI Biopsy micropipettes (B) are used to remove tissue from embryos or oocytes for pre-implantation genetic diagnosis (PGD).

RI offers these micropipettes in three profiles – flat, non-spiked or spiked.

Available in a range of ID sizes suitable for a variety of biopsies including polar body (usually 14µm ID), blastomere and trophectoderm biopsies (usually between 20-40µm ID).

Each biopsy micropipette is fire polished to minimise damage to the cell membrane.

These micropipettes are designed for anchoring the oocyte or embryo during ICSI or other micromanipuation procedures.

A smooth fire polished tip cradles the cells gently and securely.

32µm large holding micropipettes are available with a 30° and 35° bend angle.

FAQs

Q. Why would you use the spiked ICSI-Plus™ injection pipettes over the non-spiked ICSI-Plus™ pipettes?
A. It is a matter of personal preference. Some embryologists feel that because the non-spiked has a longer bevel it could be damaging, so choose the spiked injection micropipette because it has a shorter bevel with a spike to help it penetrate the wall of the egg. For procedures like IMSI some embryologists prefer non-spiked micropipettes.

Q. When would you use a large holding micropipette (LH)?
A. A LH micropipette is used to hold an embryo, and the smaller holding micropipette (IH) is for holding an oocyte, usually in an ICSI procedure.

Q. Which is the best bend angle to use?
A. It doesn’t matter as long as it is aligned with the toolholder. A lower bend angle will restrict the accessible area in high-sided Petri dishes.

Q. Why do people use flat, spiked and non-spiked biopsy pipettes?
A. Flat biopsy pipettes are the most popular for extracting cells, some people prefer non-spiked biopsy pipettes are available depending on personal preference.

Q. Which biopsy pipettes are suitable for Polar Body Biopsy?
A. Smaller biopsy pipettes such as the 14 micron is ideal for this. Usually Polar Body Biopsies are performed with a spiked pipette but if the procedure is laser-assisted then a flat end is equally suitable.

Q. What are Mechanical Dissection pipettes used for?
A. They are used to create a slit or slits in the zona pellucida to enable assisted hatching and/or blastomere aspiration. This pipette is drawn to a very fine point to facilitate control when making cuts in the zona.

Q. What are Assisted Hatching pipettes used for?
A. These pipettes are used for directing Acid Tyrodes at the outside of an embryo to thin or ablate the zona pellucida.

Q. What are Testicular Biopsy pipettes used for?
A. Used to separate sperm from the testicular tissue sample prior to intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI). The inner diameter enables easy separation of sperm from the tissue sample. The parallel walls facilitate smooth aspiration. An Injection Pipette is then used for the sperm injection.
